Bonnie Lasses in Edinburgh

New Years Day. A widespread national hangover day.

Irene and I woke up feeling a little bit worse for wear. Now don't you go thinking it's because of all the alcohol and champagne we had last night! Oh no! It was our poor little feet. All that dancing with those Scottish men tut tut tut.

After scoffing down a English Scottish breakfast, I learnt Irene and Heather hadn't seen half of Edinburgh, let alone the important bits! Right, that's it. I put my tourist guide hat on, waved my little guide flag in the air and got prepared to show these girls what Edinburgh is all about, well just some of the basics. We only had one day.

¡No! Eran nuestros pobres pies, estaban muertos.

First stop was my Royal residence. La primera parada: mi residencia real.

In all its grandeur and castle-ness (adjective relating to anything castle-y).
Con toda su grandeza.
I tried to explain  we could have all stayed in my Castle last night, but its currently being refurbished, so maybe next time?
My friend Emma joined the party. She flew all the way from Australia to be with us today.
Just kidding!
¡Es broma!
She lives in Brighton now, but she is Australian.
Unfortunately the views were spoilt by the silly Scottish weather.
Desafortunadamente el tiempo escocés arruinó las vistas.
(This next one is George Heriot's School. Remember this for later.)
Except this one (cheeky!).
¡Menos ésta!

After taking our family portraits in front of the house, I thought it was time they met my uncle Braveheart. He likes playing with swords and what not. He's always a hoot!
My tourist party were starting to get hungry and tired. So it was on to look for shelter and I had the perfect magical place to take them too.
Not before snapping some more monuments.
Like this classic Scottish bagpipes player.
Cómo este clásico escocés tocando la gaita.
And the windy street, my favourite street in Edinburgh. I don't think I've actually ever known what its real name is, just the one leading down to the Grassmarket!
It has cute little shops and restaurants and its all very colourful!
We couldn't help ourselves. Tuvimos que hacerlo.
So call us, maybe?!
Then we finally arrived at one of the most magical places in Edinburgh. The birth place of Harry Potter!
I know what you're thinking. The Elephant House? Huh? Well yes, here is where J.K Rowling spent months on end creating and writing the magic wizarding world of Harry Potter.
It justs looks like an ordinary cafe. But, did you know that the cafe looks on to the Castle, Greyfriars Kirkyard and George Heriot's school (remember?), all of which J.K Rowling used as inspiration in her book series?
I got to sit on the elephant throne, which is most definitely equivalent to sitting in Dumbledore's chair at Hogwarts. So yeah, I have powers now.
Ahora tengo poderes ¡obviamente!
Now I'm not one to usually take bathroom selfies... but here...
You kind of have to! Look at the walls!
¡Lo tienes que hacer! ¡Mira las paredes!
They are covered in Harry Potter appreciation. It's so heart-warming knowing that people all over the world love Harry Potter as much as me. It completely revolutionised my world when I read the books and its nice to know the magic lives on.

The Elephant House doesn't offer the fastest service, so if you are really hungry I wouldn't come here. There is usually a queue outside the door. But if you have time to spare I would recommend coming just to see where it all began!
Next stop on our tour is Greyfriars Kirkyard. Edinburgh has plenty of ghost tours, but don't worry this isn't one of them.
This is a touching story of Greyfriars Bobby, a little dog, who guarded his masters grave for 14 years until the poor guy died himself.
It's pretty fun wandering round the cemetery too as many of the names on the grave stones were used by J.K. Rowling in Harry Potter! I once found a McGonagall and Tom Riddell! You should go and scout out some more HP characters.

They made a little statue for Greyfriars Bobby and its lucky to touch his nose. Fun fact: the statue used to face the pub behind, so he would be looking over the cemetery, but the pub asked for the statue to be turned round, so every time a photo was taken the pub would appear in the background. What a clever marketing scheme!
¿Qué listo no?
Short girl problems. Can't reach a dog's nose. Darn it!
Problema de bajitas. No llego a tocarle la nariz. ¡Jopetas!
Got there in the end (on my tippy toes!)
Ya casi llego (¡pero de puntillas!)
Emma and I left the others and ventured off to have a snoop round the Christmas markets.
And casually bumped in to my old school friend Maria! So amazing!
I also wanted to show you what Edinburgh looks like in yucky wet weather:
And what it looks like the day after in lovely weather!

Once the rain started to really pour we all retreated inside to warm up with cosy blankets and hot tea. Then a little Miss McBride showed up to surprise us all! What a great end to a perfect day.

Stay tuned, next stop: North Berrwick! (most definitely my future retirement village)
No te vayas tan lejos, la siguient parada: North Berrwick (el pueblo a dónde me voy a mudar cuando me jubile)

New Years at The Dome

I've always been one to think New Year's is a bit of a let down. You are forced to go out & celebrate. That's why every year I chose to spend it with my family, albeit working in the family restaurant. It meant I got to earn money and be with all the people I loved.

However, last year the parents closed up the restaurant and flew to London to see the fireworks, to my absolute horror! So I, impulsively, flew to Edinburgh and had one of the best night's ever at Hogmanay's street party welcoming 2013.

This year I was back in Edinburgh but at a much classier New Years event. All of my summer camp Echo friends were reuniting for one night only for a black-tie affair at the Dome. Durham spoilt me with black and white-tie events and I've definitely had withdrawal symptoms since graduating. This was going to be perfect!

Firstly, the dress, which I ordered extremely last minute. Classic Char! So glad it arrived on time.
And Irene's dress (my fellow Spaniard). Y el de Irene (también española).
Team Spanish.
Okay our room wasn't the most stylish of places to take photos, but just you wait for the twinkly lights at the Dome! You will undoubtedly go 'Aaaaaaaahhhh' 'Uuuuuuhhhhh' 'Iiiiiiiiiiiiihhhh'

Get ready to be amazed. Drum roll please. Prepárate para asombrarte.
Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhh
Uuuuuuuuuuhhhh
Iiiiiiiiiiiihhhhh
See? I told you! ¿Ves? ¡Te lo dije!

Stunning huh? ¿Precioso no?
The downstairs had a cool circular bar with a gigantic Christmas tree sprouting from it and a DJ blasting out the classic party tunes.
Meet some beautiful Echo people. Not sure whether its the setting that makes us look beautiful though!
There were men in kilts, and Tom. Había hombres con falda escocesa, y Tom.
And more twinkly lights. Y más luces increíbles.

Then, Natalie, Sarah and I snuck off for a mini photo shoot.
Until we got busted by Jamie... But he joined in too!
Then we moved upstairs for the ceilidh. Luego subimos arriba a bailar el ceilidh escocés.
Young, Scottish gentleman in kilts asking you to dance and sweeping you off your feet (or heels)! Who said men can't dance?
I really had to give my little feet a rest and got distracted by some Echo favourites.
With my favourite little redhead (and old flatmate!) Steph.
Steph.
We went on a man-hunt for waiters with canapés and demolished almost all of them, salmon fishcakes, haggis balls... I was so distracted by the food I completely forgot to snap any of them. You will just have to take my word that they were simply scrumptious!
Then we bumped in to Lucy. Luego nos encontramos a Lucy.
My fellow College Dean, Amelia. Do you remember her from Summer Camp Part III
Ashley. Rainbows & unicorns & cupcakes really should be in the photo cause she is adorable.
Ashley.
Kudos to Sarah for surviving an Echo get-together, they can get a little crazy.
Lifeguards in the loo. Socorristas en el baño.
Bennyyyy

And these two jokers. Y estos payasos.
Let's not forget young Charlie! ¡No olvidemos al joven Charlie!
After ringing in midnight and singing 'Old Lang Syne', I sadly had to explain to Irene the grapes are a Spanish tradition. I completely forgot to bring grapes with me too, so let's hope bad luck doesn't pay me a visit in 2014.
Finally the Echo men had had enough of being stood up by all the young Scottish ceilidh-dancing gentlemen, they decided to start their own party downstairs with the DJ.
We danced in to the early hours until my sore feet could no longer hack it.

New Years at the Dome is a warmer and alternative event to Edinburgh's street party. For anyone visiting the city you simply MUST go to the Dome, whether its to celebrate New Years or simply for some afternoon tea. They put up their Christmas decorations around October, so you have plenty of time to enjoy them. The staff make you feel like a Hollywood movie star in a 5 star hotel and it's always nice to treat yourself.

Happy New Year y'all!
